And even I have to admit that sometimes bitching about it gets a little old.
So with that in mind, I started this new feature here at ITE. It’s called “Distractions” and it’s designed to help take your mind off of our current economic shitstorm — if only for a few minutes.
DISTRACTION #18: The weird kid at the end of Back to the Future Part III
This is a good one.
Come back in time with me to 1990. The movie Back to the Future Part III has just been released and you go to see it. You sit through almost the entire thing and, despite the fact that it’s definitely the weakest installment in the series, enjoy yourself.
Then, in the very end, something happens that completely changes the experience. Forever.
Check it out:
WTF is right. Like most everyone else who has seen this movie, I didn’t notice this totally bizarre touch until the magical world of the Internetwebtube highlighted it for me, but now that I know it’s there I’ll never not see it again.
The ending of this timeless (hehe… get it?) franchise will forever be changed because some little kid actor decided to make a “come here” hand gesture before aggressively pointing to his crotch. What the hell was going on there? Did he have to pee and was trying to get his handler’s attention? Was he just another cracked-out, oversexed Hollywood child star looking past the craft service table at a nubile gaffer that just got hired? Were there no other takes that could be used? Maybe one where no one made a gesture that, to me, resembles something the tin man would do directly after oiling up his wrist joint?
Geez.
So many questions.
Really all I can do is refer back to the finale of that youtube clip and say: WTF?

Little dude is totally making a pass at Elisabeth Shue’s character. He was obviously nodding at the future. or back at it. or whatever. Smart kid.

He’s obviously gesturing to his future self. It’s all part of the movie. Brilliant!
