The Apple iPad has a really stupid name

NOTE: The following article comes from ITE guestblogger TryalAndError.

I’ll admit it. I’ve been known to be a bit of an Apple Fanboy. But now, I think I’m more of just an Apple Fan. The newest creation has left me feeling less, “boyish”. Granted, I’m totally judging a book by its cover, er, name. Behold the iPad. It is, in my opinion, the worst named creation Apple has ever come up with.

There were many rumored names that the new device was going to be called. My personal favorite was the “iSlate.” But I think they could have taken it even a step back and just called it the “Apple Slate.” Not everything from Apple has to have an “i” in front of it, no matter what pop culture says.

But what comes to mind when you hear, “the iPad?” I was actually going to mock up something to display here, but I think MadTV (very prophetically) does a much better job of illustrating my first thought.

As for the actual product, there’s two versions; one with Wi-Fi only, and one that adds 3G over AT&T’s network. Oh wait. Lemme guess. The Wi-Fi + 3G version would be like an iPad with wings. You know… since it’s truly mobile. Do you think the wings would have those annoying sticky tabs that don’t actually stick?

Ok, so you get it right? I’m not fond of the name. At all.

Regardless of what I think of the name, the validity of the device as a piece of technology is still going to have to be proven. Steve Jobs said that it’s not the same as a tablet computer or a netbook. And I can see how that’s true. But does this device fill a need that no other piece of tech already does? Not really. But that’s not Apple’s M.O. anyway. There were MP3 players long before the iPod came to be. There were desktop computers long before the iMac. And there were certainly smart phones prior to the iPhone. But what Apple does is take an existing product, implement new ways to use the technology and generally make it better or at the very least easier to use.

Will it turn the industry on its head? Time will tell. I won’t be buying one, as I don’t need it. And of course because I hate the name.

  3. So what if it has a stupid name? Let’s see, things that have become popular yet have a ridiculous sounding name: 1.) Twitter, tweet 2.) Wii 3.) Lady Gaga
