WORTH THE MONEY: Haiti Earthquake Relief

Posted by drocolate on January 17th, 2010

Here at ITE we’ve been writing about things that we feel are a WASTE OF MONEY for months now, so it only made sense to take a look at the other end of the spectrum in the companion feature — WORTH THE MONEY.

Here’s today’s worthwhile item cause:

Haiti Earthquake Relief

Haiti's Presidential Palace: Before and After

I have a lot of fun making fun of things here at ITE but even I have to take a second to shine a light on the devastation in Haiti in the wake of the earthquake that occurred there last week. By now you’ve all heard the details and seen the pictures, so I’m not going to weigh this article down with that content. Instead I’m going to list 6 easy ways you can help the relief efforts in Haiti.

Let’s do this.

1. Text “Haiti” to 90999

This is brilliant. Truly. All you have to do is text the word “Haiti” to the number 90999 (in the U.S.) and a $10 donation will be added to your next phone bill. This idea makes donating simple, and that’s helping bring in big returns. How big? About $100,000 an hour big. Yeah. Wow. Take out your phone and add to that number now.

2. Give money directly to the Red Cross

A lot of people have been dogging the Red Cross lately for accusations that they are too slow in processing donations. I’m calling bullshit on that. It sounds like a convenient excuse for people who don’t want to spare a few dollars. The truth is that the Red Cross, regardless of how fast they cash your check, is one of the, if not the most, trusted philanthropic organizations on the planet. So don’t make excuses. Make donations. Go HERE now and donate.

3. Donate to Haiti’s seniors through the AARP

The elderly are vulnerable in everyday life (no offense to all of our millions dozens of elderly readers… but it’s true), so you can only imagine what a massive earthquake can do. The AARP has taken it upon themselves to focus their charitable efforts on the care and recovery of Haiti’s elderly. It’s a worthy cause that’s worthy of your money. Go HERE to donate.

4. Donate to Doctors Without Borders

Doctors Without Borders is an organization that speaks for itself. The people of Haiti are going to need an inconceivable amount of medical help in the coming weeks and months, so donating to an organization that specializes in facilitating that medical help only makes sense. Go HERE to make a donation.

5. Send Rush Limbaugh and/or Pat Robertson an email

Not everyone out there agrees that the people of Haiti need help. The always adorable Rush Limbaugh was quick to come out and say that Haiti doesn’t need any additional aid from us because they’re already getting aid through the U.S. income tax. Charming. That, however, was just a shithead appetizer to the despicable motherfucker (pardon my language… but am I wrong?) main course that is Pat Robertson. He was quick to come out and say that this Earthquake happened as a result of a deal the Haitians made with the devil. Yeah. Yikes.

So, what does any of this have to do with Haiti relief? Well I’d like to believe that the people of Haiti would be writing these two pathetic twits letters if they weren’t so busy rebuilding their entire lives. So, it’s up to us to write these letters for them. Go HERE to write Rush a quick note, and then go HERE to get in touch with Pat. Don’t hold back.

6. Google “Haiti relief”

There are literally hundreds of other ways you can help the people of Haiti so get googleing and find an organization that you like… and donate. Do it.

Thanks for listening. And now we’ll get back to the funny.

  1. Verizon and Sprint have both made concessions to waive how long it will take for the text message money to get to charities. With AT&T, it will take months.

I hope AT&T will do the same for all us iPhone users. Send em an email from their website, or call them at 1-800-331-0500 and ask what they plan to do.

  2. That’s great info, J. Thanks!

To all of our AT&T-using readers, you may want to consider donating through one of the other methods on the list above.

  4. I didn’t want to discourage anyone from giving, no matter how they want to give. The other side of the coin is that the Red Cross and others are going to need money long after all the news value of this story is over. While it may not be an intended consequence, maybe a surge of money 3 months from now from AT&T will be of more value than now. Don’t feel like if you’ve already done this (like me) it was a waste in any way.

  5. [...] You can’t spell advertising without ITE: CNN is blowing it Posted by drocolate on January 19th, 2010 ShareITE friend and collaborator J was checking out the headlines over at CNN.com when he noticed an alarming trend with their advertising. It seems that the CNN homepage has a nasty habit of spitting out horribly insensitive life insurance ads at the worst possible times. One of these worst possible times, for example, would be when your top story pertains to the thousands of recently deceased in Haiti. [...]
