WTF? ITE?: $177,000 tuna

Posted by drocolate on January 5th, 2010

Let’s run this down real quick:

The deal went down this morning in Tokyo at the largest wholesale fish market in the world. Representatives from three different sushi restaurants (two in Japan and one in Hong Kong) pooled their resources to score the winning bid on a 513 lb. bluefin tuna. And I would be really happy for them if it weren’t for the fact that that winning bid was $177,000.

That’s just so much money to spend on tuna. It boggles my mind. I’m boggled.

And the worst part is that there isn’t even a guarantee that these dudes will get a return on their tuna investment. Tuna consumption in Japan has been down as that country struggles through a nasty recession (sound familiar?).

So for now, there are three sushi restaurant owners who have 513 pounds of tuna to unload so if you’re in Japan (or Hong Kong) and you’re in the mood for some bluefin tuna, help these dudes out.

Oh, and one more thing, when I mentioned the worst part up there, that wasn’t actually the worst part. The worst part (for real this time) is that this isn’t the most expensive piece of tuna ever sold. A smaller tuna sold in 2001 (pre-economic-shitstorm) for $220,000. That equates to about 110,000 cans of tuna. Yeah. Wow.

Seriously though… $177,000 for a fish! WTF?!? ITE?!?
