ITE Free Music Week, Day 5: Misc.

Posted by drocolate on July 17th, 2009

Free shit is awesome.

Free shit that helps you get through a laborious work or school day is even awesomer.

So, with this is mind, I’m going to be profiling a different free and legal online music resource every day this week. If you already know about them, then good for you, keep up the good work. However, If you don’t, then give them a try. You may find that the work or school day goes by faster when you’ve got some great music playing in your ear.

Let’s close it out.

Day 5: Misc.

music note

Today is the last day of ITE’s Free Music Week so I’m going to end it with a small list of some of the other free music sites I’m aware of.

If you know about any that I haven’t mentioned (and I’m sure that you guys do), PLEASE MENTION THEM IN THE COMMENTS!

Thanks!

Ok, here goes:

Amazon

Go HERE. Download free music. Repeat. Amazon is an awesome resource for not only buying DRM free MP3s, but also for checking out new music. Of course the downside is that you only get to listen to what Amazon sets aside, but you never know what you may find. Check it out.

Blip.fm

I’m not going to lie. I don’t know a lot about this one. From what I could tell after poking around the site for a little while it seems like Blip.fm adds a twitter-style, micro-blogging element to  the  music site formula. You find a song and then you assign a message to that song. From there you can tweet this little combo to the world and share it with your friends. I need to play with it some more, so if anyone out there is a seasoned Blipper please feel free to descirbe it in better detail in the comments.

Oh shit, the link. Go HERE to check it out.

Myspace

Do I really need to link to it? Ok, fine. HERE. We all know about it, and most of us are pretty much over it, BUT, Myspace is still one of the best resources on the Net for music. There are some growing competitors but at this moment it’s still the best place for listening to undiscovered artists. But even with that claim, I still mostly hate it.

lala

Lala (check it out HERE) is another option for listening to music but it comes with some strings attached. The thing about lala is that you can listen to any song in their massive catalog once for free. Beyond that you start having to pay for the songs you listen to. It’s great if you’re just trying to find some new music but the inability to replay a song without paying is always looming.

iTunes

I have to admit, I’m not a huge fan of iTunes. As a music player it’s excellent, but as a music provider I’m just not a huge fan of all that pesky copy protection crap they inject into their MP3s. However, even with my personal bias out there, there are still some free music gems to be mined from it. Just go HERE and download iTunes. From there just scroll down a little bit inside the store until you see the “FREE ON iTunes” section. There’s a lot in there, so start downloading.

Artist’s websites

Pretty much every musical artist has a website these days, and most of them offer some free tunes through their sites. Just do a Google search for an artist that you’re interested in and you may be surprised what you find.

And more…

Like I said above, I’m sure I’ve only scratched the surface this week, so if you know of any other free music sites, please drop them in a comment.

Together we will never have to pay for music again.

Thank you to everyone on Twitter and facebook who dropped us a line about their favorite music sites. You guys are awesome!

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
