Free shit is awesome.

Free shit that helps you get through a laborious work or school day is even awesomer.

So, with this is mind, I’m going to be profiling a different free and legal online music resource every day this week. If you already know about them, then good for you, keep up the good work. However, If you don’t, then give them a try. You may find that the work or school day goes by faster when you’ve got some great music playing in your ear.

Day 3: The Hype Machine

The Hype Machine is awesome.

Why it’s awesome…

The Hype Machine is unique. Instead of being a self contained music provider (like a Pandora), it’s a site that gathers information from thousands of different music blogs and aggregates it all into one steady stream. This creates an awesome experience, especially if you’re interested in new music that is starting to get some blog buzz.

Like all of the sites I’ve talked about this week, the best way to check it out is to visit. So go HERE and start playing around. Enter in the name of an artist or just hit the popular tab to see a list of the 100 most popular songs on The Hype Machine at that moment. Once you get a little more comfortable you can sign up (it’s free) and start marking songs as favorites. This will create a playlist of songs and artists that you like. The whole experience gets more streamlined the more you play with it.

In the time I took playing with it, I was really shocked at some of the random stuff I found. Some of it was total crap, but a lot of it was awesome. Just check it out HERE and start messing around.

The downside…

The selection is sometimes limited because the music on The Hype Machine is directly linked to what people are talking about. So, for example, you may have a hard time finding songs from an older artist if they haven’t been blogged about in a while.

But for new artists and new releases it’s a great tool.
