Attack of the rotten office fridge

fridge

Imagine this:

You get up, head to work, sit down in your cube and start checking email. You overhear one of your coworkers talking about wanting to clean out the fridge, but you laugh it off because no one would ever be THAT stupid. Some time goes by. The afternoon rolls around and you start to smell something. At first it’s faint. It’s in the distance. But you can tell it’s strong. You try to ignore it at first. You put on some headphones and try to distract one sense by overstimulating another. It doesn’t work. If anything it only pisses the odor off, because it’s getting stronger and stronger by the minute. A small amount of panic starts to creep into the back of your mind. This panic mixed with a smell that you can’t even put into words starts to make you sick. You decide you need to move. You get up and head for the bathroom. On the way you pass the kitchen where you see the coworker from earlier. Holy shit. They’re actually cleaning out the fridge. All of a sudden you know what’s going on.

And then you vomit out your guts and die.

An entire office building in San Jose, California had to be evacuated yesterday because of the noxious fumes that were created by moldy food inside of an office fridge. Seven people had to be hospitalized and another 21 were treated for vomiting and nausea. No one actually threw up their guts and died, but I think that’s only because someone was wise enough to call 911.

Someone in the offending building decided to do a good deed and clean out the fridge. Once they get in there with some cleaning products the mixture of said products and moldy food created such a stink cloud that, well, you know the rest.

The craziest thing about this story was that the person who was doing the cleaning didn’t get sick at all. Supposedly this person has no sense of smell due to allergies.

So the person with no sense of smell tries to poison the entire office with a cloud of stink?

Smells like a good old fashioned Coup d’etat to me.
