In This Economy?

On ITE we’ve told you how to sell your exotic birds and bodily fluids, even auction your teenagers or virginity for money. Hey — times are tough, and most of it is all in good fun. But I must say that the official in-all-seriousness position of in-this-economy.com is not to actually sell your family members for money. That’s why we were disheartened to read about the littlest Latika from the Best Picture-winning film Slumdog Millionaire being put up for sale by her own father in Mumbai. This isn’t the first time little Rubina Ali has been put up for sale, it’s just the most publicized. See, now that she’s famous, her father has upped the asking price, and is reportedly, “fielding several lucrative adoption offers for the starlet.” Yeah, she’s nine. I’m thinking that selling all those aforementioned moral-questioning items should be strongly considered before selling your 9-year-old, but then again, some of those (read: all but virginity) are far less lucrative, so it makes sense.

Said Rubina’s uncle, “The child is special now — this is an Oscar child!” Well fantastic. Let’s see how much we can get for all those kids from other Oscar-winning films like Born Into Brothels and Smile Pinki. Ugh.

It seems most of the recent publicity about the critically-acclaimed film has had a steeply negative slant. It’s almost as if the movie was more documentary of children’s lives in India than fictional tale about love and destiny and Bollywood-style dancing. And that’s not very much fun at all. Without fun, what do we have in this economy?? Goodness, I’m depressed.

You know what always cheers me up? Bollywood-style dancing!

So before I spiral into a deep depression at the state of the world and its children, let’s just watch this together:

Actually, can we just sell Nicole Scherzinger instead? Please?
