Distractions: Creating Rem Lezar

The economy sucks. We all know this.

And even I have to admit that sometimes bitching about it gets a little old.

So with that in mind, I started this new feature here at ITE. It’s called “Distractions” and it’s designed to help take your mind off of our current economic shitstorm — if only for a few minutes.

DISTRACTION #4: Creating Rem Lezar

creating-rem-lezar

Creating Rem Lezar is an hour long, straight-to-video film about two children with behavioral problems who find strength in themselves through the teachings of a heroic, mulleted magic man named Rem Lezar. Oh, and it’s a musical. Oh, and Rem Lezar’s mullet is purple. Oh and he’s played by the Snickers guy.

Yeah, it’s a weird one.

I really can’t do any of it justice with an explanation. Just watch the first part below and if you get that “Holy shit, this is so weird I have to keep watching” feeling, then keep watching. Just know that if you make it all the way to part four you will be rewarded with a completely bizarre sequence that has Rem, the two kids and a slew of musical stereotypes dancing through Central Park before going to the World Trade Center towers because they are “the highest point of imagination”.

Yeah.

Here’s part one:

And if you dare to continue: PART 2, PART 3, PART 4, PART 5, PART 6

Like so many things on YouTube, I’m not sure about the origins of Creating Rem Lezar. From the credits, I know that it was made in 1988 by a company called the Rem Lezar Corporation. I also know that the Somerset Institute of Psychotherapy AND the National Institute for Psychotherapies are prominently thanked. These two factors lead me to believe, and this is a total guess, that this project was probably commissioned as an educational tool to be used in psychotherapy sessions with troubled kids. It was probably made by a first time filmmaker who took so much pride in it that he named his newly founded production company after it.

But like I said, that’s a guess.

I don’t think there’s anything left to say. Just watch it (if you can), comment and we can discuss.
