WASTE OF MONEY: George W. Bush Commemorative Merchandise

It’s time for another episode of Waste of Money.

Today I’m going to rant pointlessly about:

George W. Bush Merchandise

George W. Bush recently ended his stint as our president. His eight years in office seemed like a lifetime to me, so you can imagine my shock when I discovered that some people don’t want to let those eight years go. Instead of closing the book on George W. Bush, they’re drinking out of him, putting ice in him and even smoking him.

Let me explain.

Ever since W left office, his merchandise has been selling at a disturbingly steady clip. The main purveyor of this stuff is georgewbushstore.com. They’ve got everything from grey hooded 43 sweatshirts (for the morning jog!) to crystal 43 ornaments (for the holidays!) to 43 commemorative cigars. Yeah, cigars.

And speaking of the cigars, georgewbushstore.com recently revealed to the Dallas Morning News that roughly 20,000 of them have been sold so far. At $12 each, that’s a lot of money. I didn’t see any sales figures on the commemorative 43 ice bucket, which I’ve nicknamed the Cheney because it’s so icy cold, but I’m sure it’s selling well also.

Interestingly, a majority of the commemorative items are centered on drinking (decanters, awesome cobalt blue glasses, the aforementioned ice bucket). Though, if I were someone who supported Bush to the point of buying his cigars, I’d probably be a bit of a drinker myself.

I’m going to stop myself there because I don’t want this to become a W hate fest. In all reality he’s not the real reason why I think this stuff is a waste of money. I think it’s a waste of money to purchase commemorative merchandise for any president (though when I put on my “Heckuva Job, Jimmy Carter!” blue jeans I do feel more relaxed).

Maybe I’m just a crappy American with no respect for history, but I feel like we should all just let the old president go. Start looking forward instead of back. Say goodbye to the old commander and chief and welcome the new one…by buying his shitty commemorative merchandise. Well, maybe not.

In my opinion, all presidential commemorative merchandise is a waste of money.
