top-5-stacation-destinations

In this economy, everyone has had to make some changes. You may be doing things like eating more Ramen noodles than usual or carpooling with a sketchy coworker to save money. You may even be thinking that there is no way you will be able to get away for some much needed, spring break rest and relaxation.

Well fear not, because I’ve got 5 awesome staycation destinations that will maximize the fun AND minimize the cost.

Oh, and just as an FYI to those who aren’t familiar with the term: A staycation is like a vacation. Except you stay home. Yeah, that’s it.

Ok, with that, let’s get on with the list!

#5: Kitchen

kitchen stay-cation!

Move a couple of lawn chairs into your kitchen and just forget about the world. Open the fridge, stick your feet in and cool off. It feels so refreshing! Just don’t leave the fridge open for too long or your energy bills will take a hit. And don’t worry about that fluorescent lighting ruining the excellent spring break vibe. Just turn off those harsh lights, turn on the stove burners and you’ll have a campfire-ish thing happening in no time. There’s nothing quite like telling ghost stories by stove light. The kids will love it! HOORAY!

#4: Bathtub

bathtub staycation!

Get in the tub and stay there. For a week. Everyone knows that there is nothing quite as relaxing as a nice soak in the tub after a long day. Well just apply that same idea to an entire week. If the past six months have been total shit , then seven straight days in the tub is bound to help. Just be sure to make regular naked trips to the kitchen for meals. This will help to prevent dangerous over-pruning. Add some bathing suits (please) and invite the entire family. Though you may only want to do this if you have a larger-than-normal, garden tub. THIS IS SO FUN!

#3: Garage

garage staycation!

“Who can find daddy a 3/8 inch socket wrench the fastest?!?”

Imagine the fun you and the family can have taking a week off in the garage. Plus, you’ll be able to finally clean up some of the clutter you’ve been accumulating out there. But don’t tell the kids they’re cleaning! Make it a game. Something like “First one to stack the most old tires wins.” Kids love that stuff. Plus, if you get bored with being in the garage just climb in one of the cars for a stay-cation within a stay-cation. It’s like Russian nesting dolls of relaxation! YES!

#2: Staircase

staircase staycation!

Talk it up as a mountain-climbing adventure and the kids will be on board in no time. “It’s time to scale Mt. Our-stairs!!” Yay! Get some granola bars, walking sticks and other hiking implements and spend one entire week getting to the top, or summit, of your staircase. If your kids try to rush the process and walk to the top early, just tell them that they’re dead, because if this were a real mountain their lungs wouldn’t have adapted to the thinning air and they would have suffocated. That should settle them down. Plus when you get to the top you can all practice yodeling! HOW FUN!

#1: Backyard

backyard staycation!

Get outside and breathe in some fresh air. The possibilities are endless when you have a backyard staycation. Potato sack races? Uhmm, yes please! Scavenger hunts? Heck yeah, I found mommy’s pink slip over by the pool pump! Lawn furniture bonfire? Make it happen! An added bonus to this staycation option is that you can do it even if you have been evicted from your home (hear that, Octo-disaster?). Don’t let the small stuff like evictions and an unemployment rate of nearly 9% get you down. It’s spring break! YEAH!

YEAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!

The End.

  1. Strong to quite strong. I’m going to begin planning my stay-cation immediately. Thanks, ITE!

  2. I know for my Staircase Stay-cation, I’ll be adding an Oregon Trail-esque component. “Oh no! Daddy died of dysentery!”

  3. rondostar

Very nice list. I think I will opt for the stairs this Spring Break. I can’t wait for Summertime where I will be enrolling the kids in Summer Stay Camp.

  4. YES! The kitchen is an underrated, inspired choice that never gets the press that the others do (I’m looking at you, bathtub). Nice list.

I was thinking about locking my husband in the office until taxes are done. Do you think I could convince him it’s a “staycation?”

  6. And the humble laundry room…overlooked once again.

  7. drocolate

Laundry room was #6, I swear.

The enjoyment of putting random things in the dryer and watching them spin just wasn’t enough to crack to the top 5.

  8. Are you kidding me? Riding the dryer “roller coaster,” playing “store” by folding and re-folding shirts, huffing laundry detergent…the possibilities are endless.

  9. Whipmaster Charlie

    Oooo-wee! This funny!

  10. You forgot the next door neighbors house, especially when THEY go on vacation. It’s like a hotel! You can jus squat or promise to look after their peekeneese and just move in for a week! It’s great fun.

  11. I’ve been doing garage staycations for 40 years – I should be a Consultant!

  12. I’ve chosen, while on staycation, to rent the shed as a time share. Its just far away for the neighbors, but not too far for their kids to run home and play “food delivery.”

  13. j - j - james

You nailed it with the backyard — made even better by our week long intoxi-cation.

  14. Hahahaha, a little intoxi-cation will definitely improve any of these five.
