FASHION FLASH: Your old black is the new black.
Posted by breadwinner on March 4th, 2009It’s finally come to this; even the rich, fashion-focused glitterati are pulling back from their Louis Vuitton bags and Prada shoes. Because according to CNN.com, cheap is chic. While the wealthy set used shop for their ridiculously priced fancy pants at the boutiques, it’s now become socially acceptable to get their pants off-price at places like (GASP!) Marshall’s or TJ Maxx. Suddenly, there’s no shame in shopping the sales, wearing last season’s pea coat, or even going a couple extra weeks between your $200 visits to the salon. Who would have thought?
What’s most interesting is that it’s not even that the rich are cutting back due to necessity, it’s that it’s officially no longer cool to spend money flamboyantly in this economy. You know it’s got to be bad when flaunting your trust fund lifestyle is no longer considered cool. But let’s not do anything rash like stop spending money completely. According to Brett Wright of Uptown Magazine, “We’re looking at maybe not having the $250,000 watch, but a great watch you can get for perhaps $7,500.” Wow. I’m overwhelmed by some people’s humble ability to cut back. Must be hard. Like, y’know, if I were to see someone eating a free Arby’s Roastburger with a $7,500 watch on, I might not punch them in the face (like I would when the economy was better), but I might rather just kick them in the ass with my Marshalls-obtained $20 Steve Maddens. Does that loose analogy work for anyone else?

What if I have a free Arby’s Roastburger on my wrist and I’m eating the $7,500 watch? Is that any better?
