In This Economy?

An interesting phenomenon is taking place: hundreds of divorcing and divorced couples are living together in harmony. Well, probably not in harmony, but they are living together, thanks to the economy. As reported by CNN, the bad economy is causing uncertainty, joblessness and leading to strain and finally divorce for many couples. Then the same shitty economy that potentially caused their split kicks them while they are down: they can’t sell their house, so they are forced to continue cohabitation indefinitely. Damn. It’s like a catch 22 of misery.

If only...

Wow, lawyers. Just wow.

To add insult to injury, it seems law firms like Cordell and Cordell (representing almost exclusively male clients) are actually recommending that men divorce their wives when times are toughest — to avoid losing too much money in the process. They claim to suggest this only to men who are thinking of getting divorced anyway. Basically — and I’m just paraphrasing here — if you used to be worth a million bucks, but lost all your money to Madoff, now’s the time to kick your wife to the curb because you don’t have a dime left to lose. Perfect.

“People have to decide how much they hate each other, because if they can still live with each other, and the house or the apartment is big enough, they ought to stay together and wait for a rising market,” says another big divorce attorney. Well-put.

If you want my opinion (and you’re reading this so I’m guessing you might) I think this economic shit storm should be considered a good reason to wait it out with your potential ex to make sure you two are absolutely certain you’ve really lost that lovin’ feeling. And who knows? Maybe when this whole thing blows over in 2010 you’ll find out it really was all about money after all. By then you’ll be able to afford to get divorced! Or, then again, maybe you’ll be happy… once you can buy a yacht and have an affair with a supermodel. I don’t know…
