ryanair wants to charge to use this

Ryanair is an Irish airline that has been making some international waves with their cost cutting ideas lately. Last week they announced they would be shutting down all of their check-in desks and telling their customers to check in online. And now this week they’re taking everything even further.

Ryanair’s CEO, Michael O’Leary, said on Friday that he is considering a plan where passengers would have to pay to use the bathroom while on board. He said the following to BBC TV:

“One thing we have looked at in the past and are looking at again is the possibility of maybe putting a coin slot on the toilet door so that people might actually have to spend a pound to spend a penny in future.”

Spend a pound to spend a penny? WTF? After looking it up it seems that over in Europe “spending a penny” is slang for using a public lavatory. Yeah, ok, now that we have that cleared up let’s get back to the issue at hand.

He wants to put a coin slot on the bathroom door? Really? It looks like Mr. O’Leary is getting his cost-cutting strategies from Southwest Airlines’ TV ads.

In the end I don’t think Ryanair will do this. But if they do, don’t be shocked if there is a sudden rise in mid-air, pants-pissing incidents. Sometimes, in this economy, it just makes more sense to pee your pants than to “spend a penny”.

Yeah, I still don’t get that.
