“I am so mad at this yacht right now”

Brian Lewis, a 50-year-old petty officer with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (wha?), recently sank his own yacht and attempted to collect insurance on it. The story he told was that he took his yacht, The Jubilee, out into the Puget Sound Bay where it had engine problems and eventually sank. He then rowed back to the shore using a borrowed dinghy and filed an insurance claim stating that the yacht sank due to “unknown causes”.

Unfortunately for Mr. Lewis, boats that sink in the Puget Sound Bay are typically salvaged due to environmental concerns. The Jubilee was brought to the surface (at a cost of nearly $3,000 tax payer dollars) and the truth came up with it.

It turns out that Mr. Lewis had taken the yacht out and had actually had engine problems. However, once that happened, according to him, he went into a rage and started smashing all the engine parts with a hammer and then, and this is the real kicker, drilled a hole in the yacht in order to sink it. You have got to be REALLY pissed to segue your insane anger from a few good strikes with a hammer you’re already holding into a full on drilling operation through several inches (at least) of decking. You’ve got to be like, Christian Bale pissed.

Once the drilled hole was discovered Mr. Lewis came clean about everything, but he wanted to be clear that he sank the yacht because he was mad at it, not because he is greedy. Uh huh. Yeah. Sure. ITE? I don’t buy it.

I momentarily contemplated making this guy into a shithead trading card, but then I remembered how frustrated I get with my yacht from time to time so he gets a pass.
