WTF? ITE?: Cloned dog

Posted by drocolate on February 9th, 2009

Edgar and Nina Otto of Boca Raton, Florida recently paid $155,000 to have their dead dog cloned in South Korea. WTF???

The Ottos submitted the highest bid with a California company called BioArts, which sounds, to me, like some sort of evil mega-corporation in a movie about a dark oppressive alternate reality in the nearish future. BioArts then worked in conjunction with South Korea’s Sooam Biotech Research Foundation to clone the dog.

The original dog, Lancelot, lived to be about eleven and a half years old, and when it passed away the Ottos were not satisfied just standing by. They did what anyone else in their position would do:

First, they ignored the fact that every year, 3-4 million dogs are euthanized by rescue organizations because they can’t be placed into a proper home, and ordered the ridiculously extravagant scientific procedure anyway.* Second, they looked at their literal zoo of living animals (9 other dogs, cats, bird and sheep…yes, sheep) and did not let themselves feel any satisfaction from this whatsoever. Third, they remembered how they were really, really, disgustingly rich thanks to Edgar Otto’s father’s fortune as one of the founding fathers of NASCAR (no joke). And finally, they did the only thing they could do, and paid $155,000 to have a new Lancelot (Lancelot Encore is what they’re calling him) made. I think we would all go the same way if we were in that position. Right?

The process took several months but once it was completed the dog was shipped back to Florida, where it has yet to show any signs of creepy horror movie-esque behavior. Well, except for one thing.

You see, Lancelot Encore is obsessed with this one bush in the Otto’s massive backyard. It spends an amazing amount of time just sitting near the bush and even chewing on the bush. It often times ignores the other 10 million animals on the grounds in favor of just sitting there picking at this one bush. So what’s the big deal with this bush?

Lancelot #1 (otherwise known as dead Lancelot) is buried underneath it.

BOOM!

*In the interest of full disclosure it should be said that, despite how this piece makes them sound at times, the Otto’s are not total assholes. An example of their un-assholeish behavior is that they have donated more than $300,000 to their local humane society in the past. That’s a lot of money. Seriously. That’s like two cloned dogs. WTF??? ITE???

  1. I’ll bet those are gonna make great tasting hot dogs.

  2. if you love something, let it go. If it comes back in the way of a clone, then it was meant to be.
